Storytelling with Strategy: How to Create a Successful Marketing Video
Great marketing videos don't happen by accident
Video has become one of the most powerful marketing tools available to businesses, helping brands communicate their message, build trust and connect with audiences in ways that text and images alone often cannot. In fact, more than 90% of businesses now use video as part of their marketing strategy, recognising its ability to explain complex ideas, showcase personality and influence purchasing decisions.
Despite this widespread adoption, many businesses still approach video production with the wrong mindset. They focus on the camera, the lighting or the latest editing techniques, believing that production quality alone is what separates an average video from an exceptional one.
Whilst these elements certainly contribute to the finished product, they are rarely the deciding factor.
The most successful marketing videos are built around strategy. They take the audience on a carefully planned journey, guiding them from curiosity to understanding, from interest to trust and ultimately towards taking action.
Over the years, I've come to think of that journey in four simple stages.
Grab 'em. Hold 'em. Love 'em. Leave 'em.
The phrase may sound informal, but it reflects one of the most important principles in marketing: every successful video should earn attention, maintain engagement, create an emotional connection and finish with purpose.
Grab 'em: Earn the Right to Be Heard
Every day, your audience is exposed to thousands of marketing messages across websites, search engines and social media platforms. Whether they're scrolling through LinkedIn during a lunch break or watching Instagram Reels on the train home, they instinctively decide within seconds whether something deserves their attention.
That makes the opening of your marketing video one of its most important moments.
Unfortunately, many businesses begin with lengthy logo animations, company histories or introductions that answer questions nobody has asked yet. Before viewers want to know who you are, they first need to understand why your message is relevant to them.
Successful videos earn attention by addressing a problem, introducing an intriguing idea or presenting something visually unexpected. They create curiosity and give the audience a reason to continue watching.
This is also why understanding your ideal customer personas is so important. Before planning a script or storyboard, you should know exactly who you're trying to reach, what challenges they face and where they consume content. A senior decision-maker may engage with educational videos on LinkedIn, whilst a consumer audience may be more receptive to fast-paced content on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube Shorts. Understanding your audience allows every creative decision to be made with purpose.
Hold 'em: Reward Their Attention
Capturing attention is an achievement, but it's only the beginning.
Once you've persuaded someone to stop scrolling, your next challenge is rewarding the time they've chosen to invest in your content. This is where storytelling becomes one of the most valuable tools in video marketing.
Rather than overwhelming viewers with features, statistics or sales messages, effective videos guide them through a narrative. They identify a challenge, explore the problem, demonstrate expertise and reveal a solution in a way that feels natural rather than promotional.
Every creative decision should support this journey. The pacing, music, interviews, visuals and editing all contribute to maintaining momentum and encouraging the audience to stay engaged. When viewers feel that each moment offers value, they're far more likely to watch until the end and remember what they've seen.
Love 'em: Make Your Audience Care
People rarely remember every fact they've been told, but they almost always remember how something made them feel.
This is where many marketing videos fall short. They explain products, list services and communicate information, yet never establish a genuine emotional connection with the audience.
The most memorable marketing videos reveal the people behind the business. They showcase personality, values and authenticity, helping audiences understand not only what a company does, but why it does it. Whether it's a founder sharing the inspiration behind the business, a customer describing the impact of a service or employees demonstrating genuine passion for their work, these moments create trust in a way that polished sales messages simply cannot.
Beautiful cinematography has its place, but visuals alone rarely inspire action. Emotion is what transforms a professionally produced video into something memorable.
Leave 'em: Finish With Purpose
Even the most engaging marketing video can lose its effectiveness if it ends without direction.
After investing their attention and forming a connection with your brand, your audience should be left knowing exactly what to do next. That doesn't necessarily mean delivering an aggressive sales pitch. Often, the most effective calls to action feel like a natural continuation of the conversation.
Depending on the objective of the video, that next step might be visiting your website, booking a consultation, making an enquiry or simply following your business for future content.
The important thing is that the ending reflects the wider marketing strategy. Every successful video should have a clear objective and the conclusion should encourage viewers to take the next step towards achieving it.
More Than Just A Creative Framework
Experienced marketers may recognise similarities between this approach and the classic AIDA model: Attention, Interest, Desire and Action.
Although the principles remain just as relevant today as they were when the model was first introduced, I've always preferred to think about them in a way that's easier to remember and more reflective of how modern audiences experience video.
Grab 'em. Hold 'em. Love 'em. Leave 'em.
For me, these four stages represent more than a marketing model. They provide a practical framework for creating video content that doesn't simply attract viewers, but builds relationships. Every successful marketing video should capture attention, maintain engagement, create genuine emotional investment and leave the audience with a clear sense of what happens next.
When those four elements work together, video becomes far more than a piece of content. It becomes a strategic business asset.
Every Great Marketing Video Tells A Story
Professional video production has never been about owning the most expensive camera or creating the most cinematic visuals. Those elements matter, but only when they support a much bigger objective.
The most effective marketing videos combine creativity with strategy. They are visually engaging, thoughtfully planned and built around authentic human stories that audiences can relate to. It's this combination of storytelling, emotion and purpose that transforms a beautiful video into one that genuinely delivers results.
